As far back as before and during World War II were Swiss citizens in Sydney keeping their traditions from their old Homeland with singing and dancing alive. There existed also a Swiss gymnastic club, as it was told by Fritz (Fred) Huber from the Windyridge at Mt Wilson Blue Mtns. Later there was a Yodelling group in Sydney for a short while until their Yodeller Frank Baiker due to work commitments had to resign and the group faltered.

Then on Easter Monday 1968, after singing and yodelling at the Cahills Swiss Tavern in York Street in Sydney, Urban Gmuer, Saemi Reusser, Edwin Furrer and Ueli Gubler decided to start a yodelling group again. They drove late at night to Sigi and Ruth Achermann all the way to Cabrametta to get Sigi, who was known for his accordion playing, to join the group. Very soon there were a dozen young Swiss immigrants once a week rehearsing yodel songs at the Swiss Chalet Restaurant in Stanmore. Yodlers were Urban and Frank conductor Edwin followed by Sigi after his early departure for Switzerland.

The first exposure of the young singers was the Swiss National Day Ball and proofed a big success. Thereafter followed TV appearances in e.g. “New Faces”. With this engagements the name of “The Swiss Yodlers of Sydney” was born.

The singing was enriched with Sigis accordion, a homemade base, a coin spinning bowl, cowbells and one alphorn. The group organized the first Swiss National Day picnic in 1970 at Alf Coopers woolshed in Preston. Woodfire bar-b-que, hay- and straw bales for seating, dancing to continental music and an evening with a bush band till 10 pm ending the day with a giant bonfire. This event has seen some changes in locations over the many years. It is still as popular as ever.

 

The first dinner and dance evening was in 1972 at the Glebe Police Boys Club and was followed by many more at other venues. Frankie was responsible for the delicious meals and Housi for organizing the theme of the night. For a number of years the group organised a weekend at the Colo River. This was a popular family outing. Due to flood and fire danger this event was replaced with a Harbour cruise.

The first journey out of Sydney was a  bus trip to the Rice Bowl festival in Leeton, where we met up with the Melbourne yodel choir ”Edelwyss” for the first time. On another occasion, the club flew with Ansett Australia to Melbourne to celebrate with the “Jodel Group Edelwyss” their 20^th anniversary. The young yodel choir “Matterhorn” was there too.

In 1973 the Sydney Yodlers were at the opening of the Sydney Opera House. And took part at the Shell Folkloric Festival in the Concert hall. This for many years afterwards also. In 1978 most of our group joined the “Jodel Group Edelwyss” to a the trip to the Swiss National Yodelling Festival in Switzerland. It was held in the town of Schwyz. The group came proudly back with top honours for their performance.

Other trips to this event were made in 1981 to Burgdorf, 1984 to St Gallen, 1990 to Solothurn, 1993 to Sarnen, 2005 to Aarau and in 2008 to Luzern.

A number of trips were made to meet the “Matterhorn” Yodlers from Melbourne. One trip to the Swiss Kiwi Yodlers in Auckland NZ. We went to a Country Womens event in Armidale. The World Expo in Brisbane. Participated at the Festival Hall in Adelaide. A few performances in Canberra. Pleasure trips to north Queensland and South Australia. Countless performances in and around Sydney, Charity events and of course many drives up the Blue Mountains to visit the Hubers at their beautiful Windyridge farm, where Fritz had planted pine trees one for every Swiss Canton. Around 60 people have been members of the group over the years, some for a few months and others over 30 years. Some went back to Switzerland. The first female yodler was Vreni Barmettler. Later on Roesli Kaufmann was the leading female Yodler for many years and also in charge of the finances. Husband Housi was conductor and both as well as their two daughters played the alphorn. Apart from the current two female Yodlers, the group has also female singers, thanks to changes in the constitution. There are total of 17 members. There were times, when seven alphorns were being played, now there are two.

The average age of members is notably higher than in the early years.

Many thanks to all the people who put a lot of effort into the group. There are a few of the past members that stand out, namely Urban, Sigi, Frank, Gino, Roesli and Housi just to mention a few.

Etwas Geschichte

Schon vor und auch waehrend des zweiten Weltkriegs hat es in Sydney Schweizer gegeben die das volkstuemliche aus dem alten Heimatland mit Singen und Tanzen pflegten. Es existierte auch ein Schweizer Turnverein, so erzaehlte Fritz Huber von Windyridge in den Blue Mountains. Spaeter gab es eine Jodlergruppe, die leider nicht lange aktiv war, da der Jodler Frank Baiker wegen Dislozierung nicht mehr aktiv sein konnte.

Am Ostermontag 1968 beschlossen Urban Gmuer, Saemi Reusser, Edwin Furrer und Ueli Gubler wieder eine Jodler gruppe zu gruenden. Das war in Cahills Swiss Tavern in York Street.  Die vier fuhren am spaeten Abend zu Sigi und Ruth Achermann in Cabramatta und ueberredeten den Handoergeler zum mitmachen. Bald waren ueber ein dutzend junge Schweizer woechentlich im Swiss Chalet Restaurant in Stanmore zur Jodlerprobe anwesend. Der erste Dirigent war Edwin Furrer.

Der erste Auftritt am Schweizer National Feiertags Ball war ein voller Erfolg. Kurz darauf folgten Fernseh Auftritte z. B. “New Faces”. Man brauchte einen Namen, “The Swiss Yodlers of Sydney”, war geboren… Nebst Handorgel, hatte man eine homemade Bassgeige, ein Alphorn, eine Talerschuessel und Kuhglocken.

In 1970 organisierte die Gruppe das erste 1. August Picnic auf Alf Coopers Farm in Preston. Es war sehr einfach, aber trotzdem ein Riesenerfolg, mit Musik bis weit in die Nacht und einem Riesenfeuer. Ueber die Jahre musste mehrere male ein neuer Platz gefunden werden fuer diesen Anlass. Und unter den Gaesten erschienen sogar Bundesraete aus der Schweiz.

Im Sommer wurde mehrere Jahre lang ein Camping Wochenende am Colo River durchgefuehrt. Spaeter wurde dies durch eine Hafenfahrt wegen Ueberschwemmung und Brandgefahr ersetzt. Der erste Tanzabend mit mundigem z’Nacht aus Frankies Kueche wurde in 1972 im Glebe Police Boys Club abgehalten. Viele solche Abende folgten ueber die Jahre, bis wir  Frank Baiker verloren.

Der Jodler Club reiste 1972 per Bus nach Leeton zum Rice Bowl Festival und traf dort zum erstem Mal den Melbourner Jodlerchor “Edelwyss”. Darauf folgte ein Flug per Ansett Airlines nach Melbourne, wo der Jodel Club “Edelwyss” das 20 Jahr Jubilaeum feierte.  Der junge “Matterhorn” Jodlerchor war auch zu Gast. In 1973 nahm die Gruppe an der Eroeffnung der Sydney Opera teil und auch am Shell Folkloric Festival in der grandiosen Konzerthalle, und das fuer mehrere Jahre.

In 1978 schloss sich fast der ganze Chor den “Edelwyssern” an zur Teilnahme am Eidg. Jodlerfest in Schwyz, und kam stolz zurueck mit der Hoechstnote. Weitere Trips in die Schweiz ans Jodlerfest unternahm man 1981 Burgdorf, 1984 St Gallen, 1990 Solothurn, 1993 Sarnen, 2005 Aarau und 2008 nach Luzern.

Hier in Australien gab es mehrere Treffen mit den “Matterhoerner” in Melbourne. Zwei Reisen nach Sued Australien und zwei mal ging es nach Queensland. Per Flugzeug reiste man nach Armidale zum Country Womens Treffen. Einige Reisen gingen nach Canberra, ein Besuch bei den Swiss Kiwi Yodlers in Auckland NZ und natuerlich unzaehlige Auftritte in Sydney und Umgebung.

Oft traf man sich bei Fritz (er nannte sich Fred) und Hanni Huber im schoenen Windyridge in den Blue Mtns, wo Fritz nebst vielen Pflanzen auch fuer jeden Schweizerkanton eine Fichte wachsen liess und das Berner Oberland war aus gesammelten Steinen hergezaubert. Wohl ueber 60 Personen waren ueber die vergangenen Jahre aktiv im Klub.  Von einigen wenigen Monaten bis zu ueber 30 Jahren Mitgliedschaft. Die Statuten wurden im Laufe der Zeit geaendert, so das Frauen nicht nur als Jodlerinnen  aber auch als Saengerinnen aktiv sein koennen.

Die Alphorn Blaeser zahl stieg bis auf sieben und hat sich auf nun wieder auf zwei reduziert. Gegenwaertig hat die gruppe 17 Mitglieder. Das Durchschnittsalter der Gruppe ist um viele Jahre hoeher als vor 50 Jahren….

Mitglieder haben ueber die Jahre sehr viel fuer das wohl der Swiss Yodlers geleistet. Urban, Sigi, Frank, Gino, Roesli und Housi sind nur ein paar davon.
