Armin’s Funeral

Hi Yodlers,

I have received the sad news that Armin Oswald, one of our Bass singers, has passed away yesterday.

He will be greatly missed.  He had a great passion for Switzerland, for yodelling, as well as making a great cup of coffee.

The details for Armin’s funeral are as follows:

Friday, 8 May, 2026 at 10.30am at Our Lady of Dolours, Catholic Church, 94 Archer Street, Chatswood.

Following the funeral service there will be a Wake at The Orchard Hotel (Hideaway Room), 455 Victoria Avenue (near the Station), Chatswood (about a five minute walk from the church).

There is free parking (up to 3 hours) at the Chatswood Chase shopping centre, opposite the church or at the Westfield shopping centre.

Swiss National Day Picnic 2023 Review

Swiss National Celebration Day

The Swiss National Day Picnic was held on 6 August 2023 at the Castle Hill Showground. The day was organised by the Swiss Yolders of Sydney and The Swiss Folk Dance Company Alpegruess. The day celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Swiss Federal Constitution.
The National Picnic Day was attended by Swiss compatriots, friends and families and it was a great day. There were stalls offering Swiss delicacies, barbeques, Swiss Chocolates, Raffles and Silent Auctions, games for the children.
Those present were honoured by the attendance of Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, National Councillors Yvonne Feri and Thomas Aeschi as well as Swiss Ambassador Caroline Bichet-Anthamatten. Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis said:
“Australia is still one of Switzerland’s favourite non-European destinations, and this afternoon, with you and your warm welcome, I can easily see why.”
“Switzerland and Australia are united in the values they share and democracies like ours, can gain much from each other, despite global challenges and crises.”
On behalf the Castle Hill community I congratulate the President of the Swiss Yolders of Sydney Alios Krez and the event organisers. I look forward to next year’s Picnic Day.

Swiss Yodlers Picnic at Castle Hill 2023

Flyer national dayOur Annual Family Picnic over time has become one of – if not THE – highlight(s) in the Swiss Australian Community Calendar, bringing together many families, friends and rare, even first-time visitors from near and far. Flyer Here!

Whereas previously, we were honoured to welcome “some special guests” (we remember e.g. the visit of a member of the Swiss Federal Council (Bundesraetin) in Plumpton, and more recently, The Swiss Army (together with the Australian Navy) Bands.

This year we have the honour of welcoming the Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will be at the Castle Hill showground for a few hours. it is planned that he will give a short speech, but that he also wants to get in touch with the people.

2022 would have to stand out for the high number of loyal followers, friends, “fans” and new faces, who turned up to enjoy a perfect winter’s day after the cancellation of 2 previously planned 1 August celebrations. The preceding gusty winds on Saturday and rainy periods in the weeks leading up to “our Big Day” gave way to pleasant sunshine, warming our hearts and minds. The seemingly unending stream of people queuing up for food and drinks (also amusement rides for the children) kept our helpers on their feet all day long.

It is with gratitude that we wish to thank all those who assisted with the work and many tasks leading up to and on the day  …. we call them “Our Willing Hands” , and in this place – for fear of not forgetting anyone, as important as they all are for whatever help they assist with, – we wish to say ‘A BIG THANK YOU” including committee, fellow yodellers, their spouses, partners and friends they “invite” to assist with helping.

Thank you also to our numerous sponsors and donors (listed on this Website), the proceeds will allow the Club to participate at the Swiss Eidg. Jodlerfest in Zug in June 2023 (an event to be held in Basel was cancelled twice due to the Covid outbreak). We also say Thank You to the members of The Swiss Australian Community and their friends for being part of this great day.

Following on from a number of enquiries, we wish to advise that tickets for the Swiss National Day celebration at Castle Hill Show Ground, to be held on Sunday, 6 August, 2023 will now also be available for purchase ( cash or card ) at the entrance gate from 10.30 am on that date.

Kids prices are unchanged from last year. Early Bird available until 30/6/2023. Tickets can be bought until 6th August 16.00 on the day of the event,
